What it's for
Capital Planning sets the organization-wide defaults used when someone starts a new capital plan — replacement reserve forecasts across your equipment portfolio. It's a small settings page: an on/off switch for the whole module plus three defaults that pre-fill a new plan, not a place to build or review plans themselves.
Reach it from Settings → Organization → Capital Planning in the sidebar,
at /settings/capital-planning.
Tabs
This screen has no tabs. It's a single form: the module toggle and three default fields.
Panels and controls
Enable Capital Planning
A single switch. Off by default — this is an optional module, and while it's off, capital replacement forecasts and reserve planning don't show up elsewhere in the app for this shop. Turning it on doesn't create any plans; it just makes the feature and its defaults below available.
Defaults for new plans
- Default forecast horizon — 1, 2, or 3 years. Used when creating a new capital plan; doesn't change plans that already exist.
- Contingency basis — how a reserve allowance is computed: No contingency, Percent of replacement total, or Fixed amount per year.
- Contingency percent — only read when the basis is "Percent of replacement total."
- Fixed contingency per year — only read when the basis is "Fixed amount per year."
Changing these defaults only affects plans created afterward — nothing here retroactively edits a plan that already has its own values.
What it accepts
| Field | Format | Required | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Enable Capital Planning | On or off | No | Off by default |
| Default forecast horizon | 1, 2, or 3 years | No | Used only for new plans |
| Contingency basis | None, percent, or fixed | No | Determines which of the next two fields is read |
| Contingency percent | Percent, 0–100 | No | Read only when basis is "Percent of replacement total" |
| Fixed contingency per year | Dollars, 0 or more | No | Read only when basis is "Fixed amount per year" |
There's no dedicated validation message for these fields beyond the module's general settings-save error — a malformed value falls back to the last saved default rather than blocking the whole save.
How to configure it
This screen sets the org-wide default; there's nothing above it that configures it further. What it configures downstream is every new capital plan's starting horizon and contingency basis — the plan itself can still be edited after creation, independent of these defaults. Whether Capital Planning is available at a specific branch is narrowed from Settings → Organization → Capabilities, not here — this page only holds the org switch and the numeric defaults.
Who can see it
Capital Planning is owner-only. The sidebar link only shows for owners, and the page itself redirects any office manager who navigates to the route directly to their profile — this is one of the few settings screens where office access does not extend past the sidebar. Dispatchers and technicians cannot reach Settings at all.
