Diagnose
What it's for
Diagnose is where a technician records what they found. It is the stage between arriving and quoting: what is wrong, what it will take to fix, and what the customer should be told about it.
Reach it as a stage of a job in the field app. The route is
/tech/<job>/diagnose.
Tabs
The stage has no tabs. It is one working screen.
Panels and controls
- Findings describe the problem in the customer's terms, with a value against each. A finding written for the customer becomes a proposal in the office; a finding written for the office becomes an argument on a driveway.
- Parts and labour are added as the diagnosis firms up. No parts or labor added is the empty state until something goes on.
- Start this job first appears when the job has not been started. That is deliberate: diagnosis is recorded against a visit that is happening, so the clock and the record agree.
The findings recorded here are what the office turns into a proposal, and the parts and labour are what the invoice is built from. Both are captured once, in the field, rather than described over the phone and retyped.
What it accepts
| Field | Format | Required | Rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Finding description | Free text | Yes, per finding | "Describe the issue or opportunity for the customer" |
| Finding value | Dollars | No | What putting it right would cost |
| Parts | Pick from the price book | No | |
| Labour | Hours and type | No | |
| Notes | Free text | No | For the office rather than the customer |
How to configure it
- Price book settings supply the parts and labour catalogue, and the customer's pricing tier decides what they are priced at.
- Recommendation templates under Commissions give a technician a ready-made bundle to offer rather than building one from scratch.
- Proposals settings decide what a finding turns into back at the office.
Who can see it
This screen is part of the field app. Technicians see it on their own phone or tablet, scoped to the jobs assigned to them.
Office roles see the result on the work order record, where the findings become proposals and the parts and labour become invoice lines.
